How’s everyone doing? Dang, it’s hot out there!
Not surprising as we wallow in those oft misrepresented “dog days of summer.” Traditionally referring to the hottest, most sweltering weeks of the year—July 3 to August 11. The phrase is a bit of a misnomer as it has absolutely nothing to do with dogs lazing in the heat.
Instead, as the Farmers Almanac sets us straight, “dog days of summer” comes from early astronomy. Ancient sky watchers like the Greeks and Romans noticed that during this mid-summer period, Sirius—the brightest star in the sky and the “Dog Star” in the constellation Canis Major—rose and set in conjunction with the sun. Because Sirius is so bright, they incorrectly believed that the star added its own heat to the Sun’s, creating the extreme, oppressive temperatures.
Historically, this time was feared as a period of drought, fever, and general bad luck. Today, the phrase is just used to describe the peak of summer heat and, if you can roll with Florence above, her unfettered happiness while “running really, really fast” with her eyes closed.
